You’ve probably seen a load of stand up paddle boarders around recently in mags and videos, maybe even at your local beach. The surfing world seems to be a bit divided on the subject – soulful or sinful? Personally I hadn’t given them a go until last night when Spencer (Nosara legend and long time friend of Innocent) let Gem, Becky and I paddle out on his new quiver of 10’6″s and 11’0″s!
Spencer is setting up Stand Up Paddle (SUP) lessons and tours here in Nosara and he wanted some newbies to practice his teaching techniques on. I have to confess that I’m totally into it. It was such a blast. I’ve never had so much fun in waist high waves. It’s pretty sketchy trying to paddle out at first but once you get the hang of it it’s pretty addictive.
James from Surfing Nosara came down with his camera too and got some beautiful shots as the sun went down.
This was the first wave I managed to make it over without getting nailed.
Gem looked as graceful as usual and even charged into a couple of waves.
Spencer and his sister Kristen, running down the beach to the rescue as we all got caught inside on the huge boards for the umpteenth time. I’m not sure if he was more concerned about us or his brand spanking new boards… I’m sure it was us.
Luigi was out there too, looking like a Tico Rob Machado. He and Esteban joined in our lifeguard training last week and have become Costa Rica’s first internationally qualified lifeguards.We’ve been helping him and Esteban set up there own surf school here in Nosara and I’m pleased to say they’re doing really well.
Sam, one of our 2 new instructors elected to take out his shortboard and keep it real. He’s so stoked on the warm sunset sessions which are a far cry from the 5mm wetsuits he wears back home in the North Sea.
